Why Staying in Your Lane is a Lie

2017 is rushing to a close and I can’t say that I am sad to see it go. This year has been a crazy one, to say the least. Like many people, I like to self-reflect at the end of every year to remember all that I have accomplished and to plan out what I would like to get done in the new year. As I was reflecting, the phrase “stay in your own lane” kept popping into my head. We hear this phrase all the time but it wasn’t until recently that I actually sat down and thought about what it really means. Staying in your lane is a lie and here’s why:

No One is You
Every person on this earth is here for a reason.  Gift, calling, purpose — whatever you like to call it, we are all walking around living and breathing because we are supposed to be. When you choose to stay in your own lane, you are depriving the world of your gift. There is only one you walking around this entire planet. Why wouldn’t you dare to live out loud?
Life is About Risk— And Faith

There will always be people pursuing the same goal as you but just because they are working towards the same goal doesn’t mean that how they reach it and the end result will be the same. For example, if Ms. Robyn Rihanna Fenty had decided to stay in her own lane, we would never have been gifted the magnificence that is Fenty Beauty. She could’ve easily said “how can I compete with popular brands like Mac and Anastasia Beverly Hills” but instead she knew something important— she is valuable. Now, her multi-billion dollar makeup empire is selling out faster than it takes to boil an egg and competing makeup brands are rushing to keep up. Life and success are about taking risks and having faith that what you have to offer to the world is valuable. No one will believe in you like you believe in you!

It’s An Excuse

No one has ever become successful by staying in their own lane. Point. Blank. Period. They haven’t! When we tell ourselves to stay in our own lane, deep down what we are really saying is that we don’t have what it takes to be more. Staying in our lane is easy when we are already being burdened with self-doubt and insecurity. In 2018, make an effort to stop making excuses and wander out of your lane. You may be pleasantly surprised by what is waiting for you!
