Microneedling At Home Changed My Skin

Spending so much time at home under quarantine has allowed me to really focus on upping my skincare routine. Not only do I have the time to test out new skincare products but I also have the chance to play with a few new beauty tools I got a while back. My new favorite skin care tool is the dermaroller. A dermaroller is an at home skincare tool for a beauty treatment called microneedling and it’s the one step in your beauty regimen you are missing.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin treatment that is usually done in a dermatologist’s office or by an esthetician. Tiny needles are rolled along the face causing micro punctures in the skin. The idea is that these small tears will cause the skin to think it is injured and jumpstart its natural repair process, ultimately leaving you with refreshed looking skin over time. Microneedling is also thought to help improve the absorption of serums and other products into the skin.

Does It Work?

There’s many debates among the beauty community on whether dermarolling (aka at home microneedling) is actually effective. I have to say I was a little skeptical about whether or not microneedling would give me noticeable results. I won’t say that microneedling itself is a cure all for your dark spot and acne scar problems but when used with other skin products that target these problem areas it can be useful. Microneedling consistently has helped me fade fresh acne scars from recent breakouts. The jury is still out on whether it will help fade the longer lasting scars that I have had for a few years now.

The Process

Microneedling at home is actually quite easy. Many online retailers, including Amazon and ULTA, sell dermaroller kits that allow you to microneedle without making an expensive dermatologist appointment. These kits often come with multiple roller heads each with specific functions.

Using the dermaroller is not unlike using a jade roller. First, make sure you are working with cleansed skin. Apply your serum of choice all over your face. Take your dermaroller and glide it along your face vertically, horizontally and diagonally. Keep in mind that the goal here is not to apply excess pressure. The needles do all the work so keep your hands nice and soft as you roll. The entire rolling process should take no more than 2 minutes. Apply another serum and you are good to go! Repeat this process 3-5 times a week depending on your skin’s sensitivity level. And disinfect your dermaroller with alcohol once you are done!

Microneedling consistently has been such a game changer in my beauty routine. Everyone wants clear glowy skin, especially during the summer. Using my dermaroller for these last few weeks has my skin thriving! If you are looking to add an additional step to your beauty regimen that can help give you that fresh face confidence we all want, give microneedling a try!
