The Best Places to Find Fashion Inspiration

fashion inspiration

Often when I post a photo to my Instagram, I receive multiple dms asking where I get my fashion inspiration. I’ve always loved styling new outfits and mixing things in my closet but every now and then I do hit a creative snag. Now that we are in a pandemic, there’s even less motivation to try new looks because we aren’t leaving the house. This used to be my thinking until I realized that styling outfits, even to wear around the house, helps me feel a bit more normal. Plus you can only wear sweats on work zooms for so long before your co-workers start to silently judge you. But where do you find the inspiration to put together cute fits? Today, I’m sharing the best places to find fashion inspiration.

MAGAZINES

Okay so you were probably expecting Pinterest to be the first place on the list right? It’s definitely on the list but I wanted to start with a place that is completely underrated…magazines!

Do you remember getting a magazine as a teen whether it was Teen Vogue or Seventeen and looking at all the amazing clothes the girls were wearing? I do! I remember when my mother subscribed me and my sister to Seventeen magazine for the first time. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup and my hair texture didn’t allow me to copy those tutorials but I could definitely copy the outfits. I would cut out pictures of the looks I liked the most and put them in my purse when I went to the mall. As I was shopping, I’d try to find clothes that were super similar to what was styled in the magazine. Getting fashion inspiration from magazines is still at the top of my list today. My favorite publications for this are Elle, Instyle and Essence magazines.

SAVED FOLDERS ON INSTAGRAM

I’d be lying if I said that my personal style is all my own. Absolutely not! There are so many people whose style I find inspiration from and try to emulate. I often get inspiration from celebrities & influencers on Instagram like Tracee Ellis Ross, Ryan Destiny, Zoe Kravitz and Teyana Taylor. When I see a look I love, I save it to a folder on Instagram. This allows me to have easy access to what I find.

Finding fashion inspiration isn’t about copying someone’s style completely but putting your own spin on their style. For example, I am OBSESSED with Teyana Taylor’s style. She has the whole girly-tomboy thing on lock! This look was inspired by Teyana’s style overall. I personalized it by rocking a sweater dedicated to my hometown and my favorite harem pants from Free People. It’s also not the first time I’ve styled an outfit from her inspiration either. One of my earliest blog posts was a ‘get the look’ demo of her outfits. I’m nothing if not consistent ahaha!

PINTEREST

Rounding out the list is the crowd favorite, Pinterest. Because Pinterest is such a large platform, you really need to have a strategy to use it. I like to use Pinterest when I have a specific inspo idea in mind. For example, if I want to see monochrome outfits or ways to style a military jacket. I also save my own outfits to Pinterest. It’s a great way to look back and get inspiration from my own past looks.

There you have it. 3 of the best places to find fashion inspiration. If you have any places to add to the list, please leave them in the comments! And be sure to follow me on Instagram and Pinterest to get inspo on the daily!
