Travel Diary: Dallas, TX

Now that I am working full time I have become the master of quick weekend trips. Traveling during long weekends is a great way for young professionals to maximize their vacation opportunities without requesting a lot of days off from work. For the Labor Day holiday, my office was closed on Friday and Monday so I booked a flight to Dallas, TX to visit one of my best friends from college. The weekend was full of a fun stops but here are the highlights:

Brunch at Breadwinners Cafe & Bakery- Uptown Dallas
There’s nothing better than a good brunch! While in Texas, I hit up Breadwinner’s Cafe and Bakery in Uptown Dallas. The American style bistro is super popular and has a really cute modern/industrial vibe going on. The food was so good! If you love egg scrambles, I definitely recommend trying the McKinney Ave scramble. Made with chicken apple sausage, broccoli, jack cheese and onion, the scramble usually comes with breakfast potatoes but I substituted the potatoes for cheddar grits. Soooo happy I did! When I tell you those were some of the best grits I’ve ever tasted! I also ate an order of sweet potato fries that were so delicious I finished them before I remembered I was supposed to document them. Oh well! To round out the breakfast, I opted for the Blackberry Lemonade from their Hangover Elixirs menu. Let’s just say you only need one of those bad boys!

Music Fest at Southfork Ranch- Parker, TX

Another reason I made the trip to Dallas was to experience the first ever Music Fest at Southfork Ranch. A fun fact about me is that I’m an old soul; I honestly believe I am an old woman trapped inside a 23-year-old body. The inaugural jazz and R&B festival was held at the Southfork Ranch in Parker, TX. I was given all-access passes to the R&B portion of the festival. The lineup was absolutely amazing! Some of the acts were The Stylistics, The Dramatics, and The Temptations. Everyone put on a great show. The venue was so beautiful and was perfect for a few outdoor photo ops. A special thank you to Mr. Tony Lamb and the entire Music Fest team for the special treatment. If you are into jazz festivals, make sure you check out the Music Fest at Southfork Ranch.
Super Sized Black Beauty Supply- South Dallas
I love to visit black beauty supply stores when I travel. I know that may seem weird but I love seeing the different wig selections and rows and rows of black hair care products. They always make me feel like I’m at home. My best friend took me to the largest beauty supply in her area and I was so overwhelmed. The store was literally the size of a small mall. I guess everything really is bigger in Texas. It was so much fun wandering the aisles. I really wanted to buy a new wig but I honestly couldn’t make up my mind. There were just too many choices! In the end, I just picked up a bottle of black castor oil to moisturize my scalp while it’s in twists and this holographic fanny pack that happened to match my sunglasses perfectly. And the fanny pack was only $8. Winning!
That’s all for the highlights of my Dallas trip! Where should I go next?
